Lawyers are available to provide legal and referral services to individual KSU students who have chosen to participate in the Legal Services Plan. If the nature or complexity of a problem or the desire for services is beyond the scope or capabilities of the program, additional services may be arranged at the student`s expense through lawyers or other resources in the community. Kent State University charges each student ten dollars ($10.00) per academic semester to participate in the prepaid legal services plan. The ten-dollar fee covers all of the student`s legal fees. All fines, court fees, filing fees and other fees imposed by the court are the financial responsibility of the customer. Stacie graduated from KSU in 2006. During her studies, Stacie worked as one of the legal secretaries at SLS. After graduation, Stacie worked as a paralegal at various law firms, including Squire Sanders & Dempsey and Williams, Welser & Kratcoski, LLC. Stacie became a paralegal and office administrator at SLS in 2010. Offineer, attorney Jamison graduated magna laude from the University of Akron School of Law in 2010.

Prior to law school, Jamison attended Kent State University and completed his Bachelor of Paralegal Studies and Legal Studies. Jamison began his legal career at Williams, Welser & Kratcoski, LLC, a law firm located in Kent, Ohio. He returned to Kent State in 2005 when he joined Student Legal Services as a paralegal and office administrator. In 2010, he became the firm`s third full-time lawyer. Jamison is a member of OACDL and maintains a private DUI law firm in Canton, Ohio. Jamison received the AVVO Client`s Choice Award in 2018 and was named one of the top 40 lawyers under 40 in criminal defense. Legal services are only available during the academic semester in which the participation fee was paid. For example, a student who pays the participation fee for the spring semester is not entitled to services during the summer semester. If a student loses eligibility for any reason while being represented in an ongoing legal proceeding, legal services will be withdrawn at the earliest opportunity without unduly affecting the student`s legal rights.

SLS also strives to be proactive by offering educational seminars, workshops, classroom presentations and rights-related publications for the student body. All students are encouraged to attend these workshops to resolve potential legal issues and consult with SLS staff members on specific legal issues. PurposeWho can use SLSCosts for studentsHow to use SLS EDUCATION Students receive information about their legal rights and obligations through a combination of seminars, workshops and/or lectures presented by SLS lawyers or sponsored by the SLS office. In addition, a variety of publications are available to help students understand the law. By informing students, SLS wants to avoid serious legal complications in the future. All KSE students are invited and encouraged to participate in these programs. Students who have the legal consequences of their actions are best placed to make responsible decisions. The Office of the General Counsel (GoC) regularly organizes seminars to raise awareness of legal issues in the academic community. All students in good standing who attend Kent State University`s main campus have the opportunity to register on the legal list each academic semester.

Students who choose to pay the participation fee may use SLS for individual counseling and substitution during this semester, subject to the restrictions set out here. An exemption from participation in a university semester does not prevent the student from electing to participate in subsequent academic semesters as long as that student is otherwise eligible. SLS has a “no-show” policy to ensure access to counsel for all students. If a student makes an appointment and does not show up or cancels before the meeting two or more times during a semester, that student will lose SLS eligibility for the remainder of that semester. Fast, efficient and high-quality legal assistance is SLS`s trademark. Proper attention to any legal issue, even if it is not perceived as serious, often prevents more complex legal entanglements. In addition, students will benefit from the experience by learning more about their legal rights and obligations. REPRESENTATION Unless otherwise restricted (see Limitations and Exclusions), students may be represented in Portage County Municipal Courts (Kent and Ravenna), Portage County Court of Common Pleas, Eleventh District Court of Appeals, and Ohio Supreme Court. Students are responsible for paying all costs incurred for adequate representation (e.g. court fees, transcription fees, testimony).
